Here is a picture of my corn today.

The picture shows that its time has pretty much come. I think I have harvested all the ears off of them- unless I missed one. I hope to get out to the garden sometime this week and pull up the stalks.
I was thinking I might tie some up with twine to use as a fall decoration out by my front door. Throw in a few pumpkins and maybe a bale of hay and I will be ready for my Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations!
Once I get the corn and pole beans out (which are also pretty much done) all that will be left is my struggling to hold on cantaloupe and my two tomatoes. There also are a couple of onions which have not yet made it into the kitchen. Once the tomatoes are done this vegetable garden will be put to sleep under a cover crop of hairy vetch. Details on that will be sure to follow!

Great idea with the dead corn stalks – that will look so cute for Halloween (and Thanksgiving, if you leave them up that long.)
Also, how much space did your corn require? I’m thinking about growing some next year, but am wondering if I have the space to do it, since I’m trying to stick to rather small raised beds.

I believe you can grow corn in a limited amount of space following the square foot gardening method. I believe you place one corn plant per square foot. Check out this site for more info. Also check out Our Engineered Garden. There you can find some great pictures of their square foot garden. Good luck! This is my second year growing corn and we just love it! There is nothing better than going out and picking some for dinner right before you are ready to eat it!
Yum corn. I’ve been buying it every week from the farmer’s market. It has been such a treat. Next year I intend to have some in my garden.
Hi Daphne-

I’m sad to see my corn coming to a close for the year. I had wanted to make some corn relish out of it but we ended up eating it all before I could! LOL! Oh well, there is always next year!
Wow, what a difference a month makes in the garden. Looks like your veggie garden is ready for it’s long winter nap. Until next season & you start again. Your corn looked pretty good, did you get a great harvest?
Hi Racquel,

We did get a pretty good harvest and like I mentioned in the above comment we ate it all fresh before I could do much else with it! I think next year I am going to grow even more after seeing how much my family can eat it!
I like how the stalks are turning reddish and are backlit by the sun. The tassels seem to be about to take off into the wind, too. Can’t wait to read about the hairy vetch! I always ponder cover crops but never do them, my soil is probably the poorer for it.
Hi Karen,
This is actually my first year trying to cover crop even though I have been intrigued by it forever. A little while ago I wrote about how I am using buckwheat as a cover crop where my garlic is going to be planted. If you are interested you can find that post here. -Cynthia
