Randomness

March indeed came in like a lion today. We woke up to about 2 inches of snow on the ground- the most we have seen since moving here. It sure does not feel like Spring is only a few weeks away!

Steve and I took the younger two kids on a little hike the other day. (Who knew that a few days later we would be in for some snow!) The lake was beautiful and peaceful and empty. Seeing that we have had some heavy rains recently, the trail was quite muddy at times and Ariella did not care for that at all. She would stop dead in her tracks for fear of falling in it. Gabriel on the other hand plowed through it all and more than once had me fearful that he was going to run full tilt into the lake. He will be 2 years old this month and still possess no fear of anything. He scares me half to death though on a regular basis.

Earlier this week I finally got around to starting up another batch of sauerkraut. I have been meaning to make some since moving but just never could seem to get around to it. It is actually a family affair when I make it because the three older males in my house like to squeeze the cabbage for me. (I think they enjoy showing off who has the stronger forearms.) I chop the cabbage, they squeeze the heck out of it. It’s a good combo. This time I decided to try adding some grated carrots to the mix. I can’t wait to see how that changes up the flavor. Wild Fermentation by Sandor Katz is my go to source for making things like sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, etc. He also has a great YouTube video on making sauerkraut that I thought was very helpful the first time I made it. We have all been having some tummy troubles lately and I can’t help but think that some of that is related to how little fermented foods we have eaten since moving. With any luck this sauerkraut as well as the kombucha I have brewing will help get our tummies back on track.
