Welcome to Gardening

Let’s imagine……
You are a first rate cook, a great baker. You love all aspects of making and presenting flawless meals, sensational desserts.
The pie you’re making is faultless, nearly a work of art. You handpick and assemble the ingredients. You set the oven for 350°. You set the pie perfectly in the center of the oven. It remains at 350° for a short while, then drops to 210°. A bit later, it rises to 475°. You have no control of the temperature. The oven does exactly what it wants to do. Your pie suffers.
Or your cake recipe calls for 1 cup of liquid. Suddenly, you find 2 cups in the mix. Your cake runneth over. Or maybe only a quarter cup instead and you have a baker’s version of clay.
You make a lemon tart. Extraordinary. You leave your masterpiece in a special spot to cool. Anticipation. You return to find it swarming with bugs.
Mold attacks your pudding.
The yellow fruit compote turns brown.
Your very special, in fact, famous biscotti, are set out, arranged perfectly. Some weird visitor rearranges the display- after tasting a few.
Welcome to the world of gardening.
What a great analogy!
Wow, well that was really good. So we gardeners have the toughest job. Our conditions are always changing. I think you are doing a grand job so hang in there with the rest of us. I’ve had drought and flooding rains. Not to mention the wind that came with the floods mowed my sunflowers down.
This a great description of what it is like to be a gardener. We can’t control the weather or other environmental things that can jeopardize our plans. We hope for the best everytime we plant a seed.
Nice post!
Glad everyone is enjoying that analogy as much as I do. It always makes me laugh when I read it. Also thanks for all the kind words on what keeps happening to my poor garden this year. I haven’t given up yet!
Yeah, I relate! I ordered all these seeds from Renee’s Heirloom seeds last spring. I saw beautiful blooms on other blogs, so I know it had to have just been fate or me! Hardly anything even came up! I think I’m best off to just buy the plant itself! Yes, thus are the joys of the gardening world!
Brenda
Brenda- It is so frustrating when you order seeds and nothing comes up! More than half of my veggie seedlings did not make it this year due to our insanely wet and cold spring. You just never can tell what gardening will bring can you!
