Garden of Bumblebees

by Cynthia on August 6, 2008

This year has been the year for bumblebees in my garden. I am seeing so many visiting the garden, more than previous years. My rugosa rose is putting on some more flowers right now and the bumblebees really seem to love them. Yesterday when I was out watering I noticed this particular bumblebee was very much enjoying itself in the rugosa flowers. I quickly grabbed my camera and caught the below film clip. I love it as the little guy seems to be dancing in the flower. Like he was intoxicated with it!

That’s pretty cool, he did look like he was dancing. :) That pollen must be intoxicating on that Rugosa Rose.

I couldn’t believe how crazy he was going! That was all I was able to catch on film but he was actually there going back and forth between three flowers for quite awhile. You can sort of see in the video how covered in pollen he is. Pretty neat! :-) -Cindy

I think my bees have forgotten people exist anymore. They seem to be drunk on pollen and nectar. I wonder if it’s cause less people are growing flowers these days. I seem to be the only one for many houses around mine. Your video shows how fast they gather the pollen and move on. No worries at all to you standing there.

No worries indeed. It amazed me that I could get so close and not even have that fuzzy guy notice me. And they do move fast don’t they? I was wishing I had the energy to move like that! :-)
I am just happy to see so many bumblebees as the honey bees are nowhere to be found. I think I have seen maybe 8 the whole year which troubles me considering how many flowering herbs I grow that I
know they love. -Cindy

great video. I have really enjoyed the bumblebees in my garden this summer.

Thank you Deb! Aren’t they such nice little garden companions. -Cindy

Honey bees are hypnotic, if I stop to watch them I get sucked in and will be with them for hours. They get busy! Messing with the pollen and going from flower to flower. Watching them is better than therapy, massage, or a beer (well, maybe not a beer with friends after a good day in the garden….)

I could not agree with you more Deborah! I love to watch them skirt around from flower to flower. It amazes me how busy and determined they are. I guess that’s where the saying “Busy as a bee” comes from! :-) -Cindy

oh yeah, and also, I love your brambleberry picture in the header, good job! Do you know of a thornless blackberry or raspberry for northern California? I’ve had two requests and I am at a loss.

Thank you for the compliment!
The only thornless blackberry that I can think of off hand is Doyle’s Thornless Blackberry. I have never grown it though so I do not know much about it. The website for that blackberry can be found here. Hope that is of some help! -Cindy

I tried to watch the video, but got a message that it is no longer available. I don’t know if that is routine after a few days, or if there is a problem. I don’t know anything about creating and posting them. Thought I would mention it in case you would want to know. That is such a pretty rose, I thought I could smell it!

Hi Barbee- Thanks for the heads up. Weird as it seems to be working fine from what I can see. Maybe it was just temporary???
I wish I could make the pictures scratch and sniff as that particular rose smells sooo good! -Cindy

Not to kill the mood, but that bee reminds me of my dogs rolling around in something they find particularly wonderful (ie, dead fish, horse manure, cat droppings). Such a cute video.

Too funny. :-) I think I like what the bee was rolling around in a little better! -Cindy

Great video! I love watching bees in my garden and have put up a “bee condo” to attract some of the solitary bees.

Thanks Mary. :-) I keep meaning to do some research on orchard mason bees. Maybe next year I will try to attract them to the garden. Does your bee condo have any residents? -Cindy
