I saw one–run or should I say slither–out of my compost a few months ago. I bet they like the bugs. I don’t mind them as long as I have plenty of warning. I hate being spooked.
Agreed. This guy startled the you know what out of me! I was wandering the garden and decided to check on the pumpkin when I heard a noise right by my feet and looked down to see this fella slither deeper into the old compost pile. He must be a photogenic snake though as he held still for quite awhile as I snapped his picture.
Lucky you…a really healthy compost pile with surprise squash and a garter snake! The fact sheet on the snake was very informative~~Although, I have no plans to pick a snake up; it’s important to know they give off an unpleasant odor when handled! Gail
I thought that was an interesting fact too Gail and had my boys read it as they are always attempting to catch the garter snakes they stumble upon. Boys!
Maybe it will eat all the mice and voles from the area. I had garter snakes at my last house, but have never seen them here. I see them on the hill a half mile away, but never in the garden.
I have known the snakes must be out there somewhere in the garden as my son found a snake skin last year but this year is the first year I actually stumbled upon one. It can stay and eat all the moles it desires! I am having a problem with them at the back end of our yard. In fact they have killed several native plants I attempted to transplant back there by their extensive tunneling.
My husband would agree with you completely Racquel! He cannot stand them. As long as they do not get too close they are fine by me. In our old home I once had a very large garter snake slither under the screen door and into the living room. Now that was a fun afternoon!

Which is exactly why he is a very welcome guest in this garden!

Hopefully this little garden snake will not eat your mystery squash. Sure is looking good!

A helpful garden friend I know, but they still creep me out.

Oh I just love the little surprises a garden can throw at you! You found an especially nice one, Kim
This garden has been full of surprises this year! I never know what I am going to find next out there. Keeps it interesting I suppose!
