Daylily Envy and Even More Rocks

by Cynthia on June 17, 2008

A few posts back I wrote about the new veggie garden we put in and the wall of large rocks we made to enclose it. Since putting up that wall I have been trying to decide if I wanted to place some of my container plants in the ground around the wall to soften the look. Then I read Dee’s blog and her post on being daylily crazed. Her lovely pictures gave me a case of daylily envy. The next thing you now I am thinking about how nice a daylily would look along the wall next to the yarrow and Echinacea that I was considering putting into the ground. (They had both overgrown their containers from last year and I needed to divide or do something with them quick. So, they were perfect candidates for going in along the wall.)

A few days ago I stopped by my local nursery and wouldn’t you know they had 4 inch pots of daylilies for sale. Of course I came home with one. I bought one that has a yellow flower with a dark center called black-eyed stella.

Today I decided I was going to put those three plants into the ground while my daughter took her nap. I thought it was going to be a quick process. Dig a couple holes, mix in some compost and maybe a little organic fertilizer, and then plop in the plants. Boy was I wrong. And what was I thinking too! After all didn’t all of those rocks used to make that wall come from this backyard?!

I didn’t dig a hole; I chipped a hole into the earth. The amount of rocks in my yard is amazing! I only was able to get two of the three plants planted thanks to how long it took me to dig a hole for them. The picture below shows just how many rocks I removed in order to plant those two plants. The  4 inch pot in the picture is to put in perspective the size of some of the rocks.

I was able to plant the daylily (which is in bud!) and the yarrow which is called lilac beauty. The yarrow is ready to flower any day now. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the Echinacea into the ground as well.

Thank you for linking to me. I’m glad I inspired you to “envy” and to plant a daylily. It will look great with that yarrow.~~Dee

I can so empathize about the rocks! The first garden I planted in my area, I had to use a pickaxe! I’ve since gone to raised beds, containers, and letting the rocks and clear space decide where the beds will be, instead of making some theoretical design it’s hell to carry out.

Congratulations on your perseverance, and I’m glad it’s paying off for you (judging by the “it bloomed” post).

I think I am going to follow your lead with the raised beds the next time around! I am wanting to redo our front yard and we have discussed adding another vegetable garden but this time I think we will stick with raised beds! It’s great that I have a husband and 2 sons that got into using the pickaxe otherwise that new veggie bed would have never been put in! :-) -Cindy
