[...] Late to the Party October 19, 2008 Filed under: flora, my garden — greenwalks @ 7:58 pm Tags: cosmos, hell strip, parking strip, planting strip, re-seed, Seattle, urban gardening, volunteer Down in the parking strip garden, ripping out the awful-looking late-season asters (they have a horrible rust-looking problem, visible in the photo below, so I may just yank out all that come up next spring), I came upon a nice little surprise. I had spent the summer bemoaning my lack of cosmos re-seeding volunteers, even as some other garden bloggers were commenting that they had almost more than they wanted. [...]

I've always thought Cosmos are beautiful plants. Your pictures and the comments about them lasting well has me thinking I really should try them next year. I know they are supposed to be easy to grow, so it sounds odd that I'd say I might try them. My problem is that I am still in a serious battle with the weeds. I'm afraid if I try to grow anything from seed I'll either find out I was coddling weeds or, conversely, that I pulled out the good seedlings while weeding because I didn't recognize them. It might be worth the risk, though!

You could always try starting the seeds in newspaper pots. That is what I like to do as they can be planted directly into the ground since the newspaper decomposes. That way you wouldn't have to worry about accidently pulling them up! ;-)

Good luck with your apple tree by the way. I saw the picture and it was sure loaded with fruit. So sad. :-( -Cindy

I figured the ring out and it is wonderful to see all the blogs I love so much gathered in one place! Great idea!!!

Yay! I'm happy to hear that you got it figured out. Isn't it nice to be able to randomly visit all the blogs? That is what I enjoy about it. It is like flipping through an online magazine! -Cindy
