Can You Id This Weed?

by Cynthia on August 15, 2008

Last week I had posted about two of the weeds in my garden that are persistent andĀ uninvited guests that seem to multiply by the thousands over night. I had also mentioned a third weed that I have not a clue as to what it is. I finally remembered to take this weed’s picture before brutally (and victoriously) yanking it out.

Whatever this weed is it is popping up all over my garden. It is especially making its appearance known in the new vegetable garden and along the edges of our compost piles.

I think the two below pictures are fairly decent enough for identifying it. If anyone happens to have a guess as to what this plant may be please let me know. I really hate being at war with a plant when I do not know what exactly is. (Both pictures can be clicked on to enlarge.)

I don’t know what that weed is Cindy, but it grows rampant in my garden too. I just keep yanking it out, it seems to come up easily.

Hmm, well hopefully someone can identify it for both of us then! -Cindy

I’m sure your weed is Lady’s Thumb. It grows quickly in my garden. I’m always pulling it out. If you Google Lady’s Thumb weed you will find some website that might confirm this for you.

Thank you so much Crafty Gardener! I am googling right now! :-) -Cindy

After doing a Google search on Lady’s Thumb weed I am thinking you might be right. I found this site that is pretty good and the leaves certainly resemble my weed as well as the flowers. It does not say how tall Lady’s Thumb weed gets though. My weed tends to stay low to the ground or maybe I just don’t let it get big enough before I yank it? I do think we are on to something though! -Cindy

Cindy, it is a Persicaria (lady’s thumb). Funny, but I paid high dollar for a variety of that called Red Dragon. A good friend laughs at me because it is such a weed where she is from in Germany.

Thank you Deb! It does make me feel better, for whatever reason, knowing what weed I am actually dealing with. I had never heard of the Red Dragon variety until I started trying to find out if my weed was in fact Lady’s thumb. Yesterday I was reading about the Red Dragon at a website and it actually sounded rather interesting! -Cindy
